I though cambium and under bark were the same thing. In fact, they are the same thing. Vascular cambium is the layer next to the wood. Unless there's a layer I've never heard of, then cambium it is.

There is bark, then inner bark--stringy material you can make cordage of from some species, then cambium, then wood. When new to this sometimes you remove the outer bark and think you've hit wood. You...

Also: Hickory and pecan can fool you easily. The inner bark can be about as tough and strong and wood-like as the true wood of other species. Tim

Wow. I was unaware of that. I tend to remove inner bark because I often want to use it for something else - ash bark can be scraped thin and used to make a pouch.
